Letter: Measure G allows existing operations to continue

To the editor,

–Yes on Measure G is calling out the opposition for their untrue statements intended to deceive the citizens of SLO County (the Big Lie). The truth is that Yes on Measure G allows existing oil operations to continue as long as operators want it to. The truth is that Yes on Measure G allows all routine well maintenance as defined by state rules and regulations, including use of acids. MG bans new oil drilling and fracking in SLO County; it allows exiting operations to continue.

Measure G is a huge step forward for our county to protect its groundwater resources from the use and contamination threat posed by expanded oil extraction and fracking. Plans to expand the Arroyo grande oil field by 481 new oil wells and the injection of more than 1,400,000 gallons a day of toxic wastewater into our drinking water aquifers. Most county water basins are in overdraft and drought continues. We need our water for more important needs than new oil wells.

Measure G helps reduce the increase in greenhouse gas emissions associated with expanded oil drilling to improve air quality locally and globally. The Arroyo Grande oil field has one of the most carbon intensive oils on Earth. Increasing its use is more dangerous to the climate than that of other oils. The United Nations IPCC science panel just reported we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 45-percent by 2030 and net zero by 2050 or face more damaging climate change consequences.

Vote “Yes” on Measure G.
