Letter: Measure G is misguided

Dear Editor,

I would like to respond to Stefanie Monahan’s Letter that was published on June 26, 2018.

While I am grateful for people like Stefanie Monahan who have decided that my hometown of 45 years is worth relocating to, I take issue with our new neighbor.

I understand her wish to live in the beautiful and vibrant SLO County but the truth is the oil and gas industry has operated here safely and quietly for over 100 years. And now you want to shut it down. Measure G is completely misguided. The way the initiative is written, it will shut down the oil and gas industry in San Luis Obispo County. Our county absolutely cannot afford to lose another industry, more jobs, and tax revenue. We are already losing Diablo Canyon. On top of the $6 million in tax revenue we’re losing with Diablo Canyon, do we want to lose another $2 million to our General Fund? These budgets cuts will hurt us. You can be sure that our emergency services will not be better or more efficient with less money to run on.

Let’s not hurt our county. The oil and gas industry has been safely operating in our county for decades and we can rely on them to continue to be good neighbors and support our community. Vote no on Measure G this November.
