Letter to the editor: Let’s do what keeps us safe

Letter to the editor paso robles daily news

To the editor,

–My whole life, I have lived on the edge, believing that nothing bad would happen to me because I could take care of myself. I am not a fearful person. I can’t live my life that way. More guts than brains. That would be me.

But not on this one. This one I can’t brave my way out of if I get sick. I do not have health issues. I do not have a compromised immune system. I’m old and I want to get a lot older, so I am going to do all of the things I know to be smart and prudent to keep myself safe and well. You may deem that to be an overreaction, but for me, taking a cavalier approach is not in my, or anyone else’s best interest. If I’m safe and healthy, others around me will be as well.

If the pundits are wrong and this was all for not, I guess we’ll all be a little more than annoyed about what they put us through. But if this virus gets out of control because we run out of patience or think that those advising us are “fear mongers,” and we stop listening, I ask, who of you is willing to step up and say enough? Who is willing to throw caution to the wind and go out to shop without a mask, without wiping down the grocery cart or washing their fruit and veggies? Who will go without constantly washing their hands, and who of you is ok with the coughing and sniffling of someone standing right next to you in a public space? Or who of you would attend a concert with the masses and not come away with just a little bit concern?

You want our businesses to reopen before we’ve been cleared to go? You want all of those employees to go back to work knowing the experts say this is not over? How should we choose who gets to reopen and who stays in financial ruin? I’m certainly not opposed to an open dialogue on this, but you have to know that those decisions would be made by our State, County and City leaders, not by you and me putting “pressure” on them to do something different than they’re doing right now. They are always going to make decisions in favor of citizen safety, whether you agree with it or not.

Our town is going to be in financial ruin. I don’t think anyone doubts that. The road back won’t be easy or quick. But rather than debate if this is all truth or government BS, let’s do what keeps us safe and well in the short-term, to ensure we have a long-term future. Now is not the time to give up and start doubting the people working in our best interest. Do you believe the naysayers? Are all of the experts wrong? Are you willing to bet your life on your belief that they’re just blowing fear up your backside?

If you do, then go forth and God speed. But stay away from me.
Be Well.
