Letter: Paso Robles School District debt and hiring decisions

To the editor,

I am a local teacher, and I know many other teachers. One of my friends is an English and drama teacher at Paso High. She has been trying to get her husband a job at her school. He used to work in the film industry, so he has the experience to get a CTE credential, an industrial/technical teaching credential. However, he has no teaching experience to speak of, and he did not go through a teaching program. He was just offered a job at Paso High, albeit his lack of experience.

As someone who suffered through a credential program at Cal Poly and is now a newer teacher, I find this incredibly unfair and also unwise, especially for a district so in debt. Many teachers quit within the first few years, though I do not know the statistics on teachers who do not go through credential programs. I figured I would reach out because of Paso’s financial woes – they may be caused by poor hiring decisions.

Thank you,

Eileen Lybarger
