Letter: Proud of our AVID students at Lewis Flamson
Dear Editor,
– This week, I had the distinct pleasure of visiting Lewis Flamson Junior High as a guest speaker. I was referred by Ms. Stephanie Lovejoy and invited by Ms. Alexandra Huggins to speak with their AVID students about my career and the path I took to get there.
AVID stands for “Advancement Via Individual Determination” and is a program that helps students prepare for college and careers by improving organizational and study skills, asking questions, and cultivating critical thinking.
I was blown away by the professionalism of the students, their thoughtful questions, and their respectful manners. When I entered the classroom, they all greeted me warmly with a handshake and introduced themselves. As I told them about my schooling and work experience, they listened attentively, taking notes, and asking pertinent questions.
Now, I’m currently in the middle of my workday, receiving dozens of thank-you notes and follow-up questions from the students. Each one is thoughtfully crafted and well-written.
We often hear negative news about our schools, in particular middle school, but I wanted our community to know that there are amazing things happening in our schools, the AVID program being one of them. These students, led by Ms. Huggins and Ms. Kroener, are going places, and I’m proud of who they are and who they are becoming.
Sincerely,
Melanie McWilliams
