Letter: Short Term Rentals also impact housing shortage

Letter to the editor paso robles daily news

To the editor,

My wife and I moved to Paso after I retired. We visited for many years, fell in love with the small town friendly feel and have now lived here for 14 years. I had the pleasure of serving on the City Planning Commission for two years where I learned a lot about the concerns of the city and citizens. One of the big issues was the lack of affordable / workforce housing. With vacation rentals not only is it mixing businesses into neighborhoods, but it is taking 100 or more houses away from availability to people that need local housing. I am very surprised that the hotel industry has not entered into this debate. The building codes call houses single family dealings which are intended for one family to live in, not business opportunities or multi family living.

Perhaps the city should put this issue on the ballot to have voting citizens voice their desires, not various groups influencing council members to vote representing personal interests.
