Letter: The truth about making San Miguel safer

To the editor,

Having read other letters to the editor, I’m surprised at the inaccuracies presented to the public. Overall, the sentiment is something shared by all current board members – We all wish to make San Miguel a safer place to live and visit.

The fact is that many discussions have been ongoing since I was appointed to the board in January of this year. These discussions involved all board members, the San Luis Obispo Sheriff Commander and even a San Luis Obispo County Supervisor. The implementation of a Sheriff sub-station was at that time, and is still unanimously supported by all members of the board.

What will be required to have a Sheriff sub-station in San Miguel is funding. The cost of the deputy’s salary, vehicle, equipment, and a secure place to operate including the handling and interview of suspects would all fall on the shoulders of San Miguel – Unless we can get some support from the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors. I have had conversations with Supervisor John Peschong at a community safety/neighborhood watch meeting specifically to see what our community needs to do to get a much-needed sub-station.

Our community can’t afford the cost alone, so I and other board members will again seek budget funding to secure a locally stationed Sheriff Deputy for San Miguel.

My family and I are very proud to call San Miguel home. I can’t think of a more important topic than community safety and I’ll fight tirelessly for the safety and security for my family and every other community member until we have an established law enforcement presence. No one should feel unsafe in the community we call home.

Current San Miguel CSD Board Director and Candidate
