To the editor,
We need a rent freeze and moratorium on mortgage payments.
As we advise our residents to shelter-in-place, the word shelter takes on new meaning. Tenants, many already stretching to pay rents escalating beyond their incomes, face an order to stay in a home they’re worried they can’t afford. Homeowners, many on fixed incomes or struggling to stay in their neighborhoods, face looming mortgage payments.
Every member of our communities should have a safe and secure home during and after this crisis is over. No one should have to choose between putting food on the table and their housing.
Community call to action: Please take a minute to take action right now! With urgency, we need our city council members to agendize and vote on a resolution for the city to contact our governor calling for a rent cancellation and a moratorium on mortgage payments. Please email your city council members right now to protect all people. You can use the sample language below or write a message of your own:
Dear City Council Members,
Please agendize and vote on a resolution immediately to write our governor to ask for a rent cancellation and moratorium on mortgage payments until people can safely return to work and COVID-19 is no longer a threat. This benefits all Californians and we know you will do what is best for our city and state.
