Library reports success with annual reading incentive program

William Ament, the summer reading program ‘Read to Me’ winner.

–Community members served by the Paso Robles City Library had a great time this summer participating in the annual Summer Reading Program, Reading Takes You Everywhere.

Nearly 900 people signed up for the library’s reading challenge – to read 10 books or for 10 hours this past summer. Of those, well over half completed their challenge, earning prizes and a chance to enter in the grand prize drawing at the end of the program.

In addition to reading, library users enjoyed a variety of fun classes and events. In addition to the library’s on-going story times, Maker Monday STEM classes, Lego Builds, and drop-in crafts children enjoyed music with Vaughn Kaser, the Wild Child Adventures Bubble Show, a performance by the Pyjama Drama Interactive Theater, and several presentations by the Charles Paddock Zoo and the SLO Children’s Museum’s Imagination Playground.

Noah Bombardieri the Teen summer reading program winner.

Local teens enjoyed two Club Ghibli meet-ups with movies, anime-themed crafts, and authentic Japanese snacks. They also had an opportunity to explore circuits during a special Teen Tech event.

In keeping with the travel theme of the Reading Program, adults enjoyed learning how to best plan a vacation with Fred from Travel with Fred, and traveled vicariously with local travelers Pamela Alch and Jack Marino to India and Karen MacLaurin and Mike Cussen to Hong Kong and Southeast Asia. Adults also had an opportunity to commemorate a favorite road trip using embroidery and participated in a new monthly Table Top Game day with Library Volunteer, Erik Veach.

The much-anticipated grand prize drawing occurred at the end of the Summer Reading Program. Read to Me winner William Ament won a set of travel vehicles and a giant road map to drive them on, Children’s Summer Reading Program winner Chase Donaldson will enjoy adventures with his new backpack full of equipment to help him explore his world, and Teen and Adult Summer Reading Program winners Noah Bombardieri and Sarah Botts will take travel to the air with their new prize droids.

The Paso Robles City Library is located at 1000 Spring Street and is open Monday – Friday 10-8, and Saturday 10-5. For more information on library programs and events, call (805) 237-3870 or visit www.prcity.com/library.
