Library supports early literacy with ‘1000 Books Before Kindergarten’ reading program

Ongoing program tracks reading milestones and rewards participation

    – The Paso Robles City Library is hosting an ongoing early-literacy program encouraging families to read 1,000 books with their children before they begin kindergarten.

The “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” program launched Dec. 31 and is open to families with young children. The program challenges caregivers to read regularly with their children, with all books counting toward the total, including repeated titles.

According to the library, reading with children supports early academic skill development and provides opportunities for creativity, imagination, and family engagement. Reading one book per day allows families to complete 365 books in a year and reach 1,095 books over three years.

Eligible reading materials include picture books, board books, books read at home, books read while running errands, and books read during library storytime programs. Families may track progress using the library’s online tracking software, Beanstack, or by using paper logs provided by the library.

Children earn milestone prizes after reaching 250, 500, 750, and 1,000 books. Upon completing all 1,000 books, participants receive a certificate from the library.

Families can visit the children’s desk at the Paso Robles City Library to sign up and receive additional information about the program.
