– The Paso Robles City Library will hold its monthly book group discussion featuring The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. The event will be held in person, and registration is required for participants ages 16 and older.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning novel follows Elwood Curtis, a Black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, who is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy. There, he develops a friendship with fellow inmate Turner, who believes the only way to survive is to scheme and avoid trouble. As conditions worsen at the academy, the tension between Elwood’s ideals and Turner’s skepticism leads to a decision with lasting consequences.
The novel is based on the real history of a reform school that operated for 111 years and affected thousands of children. It is available in regular and large print through the Black Gold Library System and can be accessed as an eBook or audiobook through the library’s Libby digital platform.
