Local congressman sanctioned by Russia for supporting Ukraine
Hundreds of US leaders hit with retaliatory sanctions
– Congressman Salud Carbajal (D-Santa Barbara), who represents Paso Robles in the US House of Representatives, was sanctioned by the Russian government on Wednesday for his support of Ukraine.
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced sanctions against 398 members of the US Congress and 87 Canadian senators. The move comes in response to a “wave of anti-Russian sanctions imposed by the administration of Joe Biden,” according to Tass, a Russian news agency.
The sanctions bar the representatives from entering Russia. The list included both Democrats and Republicans.
The United States government had previously sanctioned 328 members of Russia’s federal assembly, the State Duma.
Rep. Carbajal responded to the sanctions on social media:
My staff just let me know that the Russian government has sanctioned me for my work in Congress trying to end their unjustified war.
Never been prouder to #StandWithUkraine ????????
