Local hospitals participating in ‘The Global Big Latch On’ Event

–In recognition of World Breastfeeding Week (Aug. 1-7), Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center and Twin Cities Community Hospital are taking part in a global celebration to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding.

On Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, breastfeeding mothers and their babies are invited to join lactation consultants and nurses for The Global Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event in multiple locations around the world. Part of the goal of the event is to foster a sense of community and solidarity among fellow breastfeeding mothers, while also making breastfeeding a normal part of “day-to-day life” at a community level.

At 10:30 a.m., in Santa Rosa Park in San Luis Obispo, local mothers will join thousands of women gathered in their own communities across the globe to simultaneously nurse their babies and try to break the current Global Big Latch On record of almost 21,500 children breastfeeding at 778 locations, across 28 countries.

According to the World Health Organization, breastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure a child’s health and survival.
