Local non-profit rated ‘Exemplary’
Founded in 1970, PSHH is the largest nonprofit affordable housing developer on the Central Coast. With a mission of building homes and providing services to strengthen communities and change lives, PSHH serves low-income households, working families, seniors, veterans, those living with disabilities and the formerly homeless.
–Peoples’ Self-Help Housing (PSHH) held onto its “Exemplary” rating as a nonprofit affordable housing developer awarded by NeighborWorks America, a nationwide network of trained and certified community development organizations serving nearly 4,000 communities across the country.
“We are thrilled to be once again named as one of the top affordable housing developers in the nation,” said PSHH President & CEO John Fowler. “This accolade affirms the great work we are accomplishing in support of hardworking families along the Central Coast. We are honored that our combination of housing development, property management and site-based services has attracted national attention, but more than humbled to be in service to those who benefit from these beautiful neighborhoods.”
Annually, members of the NeighborWorks America network are assessed in key areas including Production and Program Services, Resource and Financial Management and Organizational Management and Board Governance. Organizations are then rated on a four-point scale of Exemplary, Strong, Satisfactory and Vulnerable. These regularly scheduled reviews are an effort by NeighborWorks America to ensure accountability to Congress, Office of Management and Budget (OMB), funders and taxpayers for the allocation of grant funds.
Fowler attributed PSHH’s exemplary rating to “the hard work, dedication and professionalism of the board and staff of PSHH.”
PSHH currently has a full project pipeline throughout the Central Coast. In San Luis Obispo County, housing for seniors is being built in Templeton and 29 households are building through the homeownership program in San Miguel. For Santa Barbara County, PSHH is set to complete two developments in Goleta with ground soon to be broken in Santa Maria and Guadalupe for veteran and farmworker housing respectively. PSHH also recently opened a new office in Ventura to support services and programs already being offered to the community.
