Local preschool earns statewide early education excellence award
Award recognizes innovative early learning program serving ages 2 to 5
– The Marie Bauer Early Education Center has been named the sole recipient of the 2025 California Early Childhood Special Education “Spotlight on Excellence” Award, according to the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District.
The annual statewide honor recognizes one program that demonstrates outstanding inclusion and innovation in early education. Marie Bauer’s model integrates special education services directly into its preschool classrooms, serving children ages 2 to 5 in a play-based, hands-on learning environment.
“At Marie Bauer, there are no differences — only different needs,” said Heather Wahlberg, director at the Early Education Center. “Every child walks into a classroom where they feel welcomed, supported, and inspired to grow.”
Parents and staff describe the program as a collaborative space where co-teaching teams and intentional instruction help children thrive. Parent Blanca Vanquez said, “When my daughter started at Marie Bauer, she wasn’t speaking at all, and when she left from here, she was saying so many words. She was so social.”
Superintendent Jennifer Loftus said the award reflects the district’s dedication to students and staff. “To be named one of the top programs in California affirms what we see every day at Marie Bauer — a nurturing environment where children develop curiosity, empathy, and a true sense of belonging. Our staff’s dedication is nothing short of inspiring,” Loftus said.
District officials said the award affirms Marie Bauer’s position as a statewide model for high-quality, inclusive early learning and highlights PRJUSD’s efforts to build strong foundations for lifelong success.
