Local women’s vocal ensemble presents March 1 concert in San Luis Obispo

    Canzona Women’s Ensemble

Program includes sacred and secular works for women’s voices spanning multiple centuries

    – Canzona Women’s Ensemble will present “Renaissance, Baroque, and Beyond: Sacred and Profane” on March 1 at San Luis Obispo United Methodist Church.

The concert will take place at 3 p.m. and will feature special guests Grace Seng and Amethyst Shanks on violin.

The program includes sacred and secular works for women’s voices spanning multiple centuries. Selections include a Renaissance “Magnificat” by Isabella Leonarda, Marian motets composed by an Italian nun, Medieval and Renaissance antiphons and madrigals in English, French, and Italian, early Baroque duets and trios, and the 20th-century “Litanies à la Vierge Noire” by Francis Poulenc, featuring organist Janis Johnson. Seng and Shanks will join on violin for the Baroque “Magnificat.”

“This is an area of music that has been dear to me for many years… I have always loved exploring repertoire from the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, both a cappella and accompanied,” said co-artistic director Jill Anderson.

The concert is sponsored by Cricket Handler and Jerry Boots in honor of Anderson.

Tickets will be available at the door and through the ensemble’s website at www.canzonawomen.org.

Canzona Women’s Ensemble presents two concerts each season, one in the fall and one in the spring, and collaborates with artists on the Central Coast, including poets, composers, dancers, and musicians of all ages. The ensemble was founded in 2009 by artistic directors Cricket Handler and Anderson and is in its 17th season.
