Locals raise over $50,000 for shade and lighting at park
Paso Robles Mayor Steve Martin and City Councilman Steve Gregory spearheaded a fundraising effort along with the Paso Robles REC Foundation to add a shade structure and lighting to the new Uptown Family Park. The “Made In The Shade” fundraiser held Aug. 25 at Rava Wines raised over $50,000 in donations.
Over 200 locals attended the event and contributed to the cause. The work for the park is already going out for bid, Gregory says. Major sponsors will be featured on a brass plaque in the park.
During construction of the Uptown Park, design issues prevented the installation of the necessary shade structures. “A playground without shade structures in Paso Robles is like a swimming pool with no water,” says Gregory. “This will make a huge difference in the use and availability of this incredible recreational facility for our children.”
Gregory says the park is used by over 1,000 kids in the nearby neighborhood and 600 students at Georgia Brown Elementary. Shade structures will increase usage of the play structure by 50-percent, Gregory says, because when the temperature rises over 80 degrees, it is not usable.
