If you’re like the millions of Netflix subscribers around the world who spend more time scrolling through options rather than actually watching anything, you’ll be pleased to know that an exciting new miniseries has just dropped. Netflix’s Griselda is a true crime drama that unravels the enthralling narrative of Griselda Blanco, a Colombian drug lord whose life is as tumultuous as it is intriguing.

Griselda joins the ranks of other Netflix hits like The Chosen, which began as the largest crowd-funded film project of all time and now boasts 770 million episode views. Below, we’ll delve into Griselda’s plot, stellar cast, and cultural impact that altogether make it an entertaining watch, offering viewers a front-row seat to a gripping saga.

Plot and cast

In the shadowy realms of organized crime, the notorious legacy of Griselda Blanco is set to captivate audiences once again in the highly anticipated Netflix miniseries Griselda. A riveting true crime drama set in the same universe as the hit series Narcos, this new show thrusts the incomparable Sofía Vergara into the title role. Vergara stars alongside Alberto Guerra as Darío Sepúlveda, Martin Rodriguez as Jorge “Rivi” Ayala-Rivera, Juliana Aidén Martinez as June Hawkins, Karol G as Carla, and more.

The series delves deep into the turbulent world of drug cartels, unearthing the grim and violent tale of a woman who navigated the treacherous path to infamy. As Vergara embodies the complexities of Blanco’s character, Griselda promises to be an enthralling exploration of power, betrayal, and the indomitable force of a woman who carved her name into the archives of criminal history.

History behind the show

Griselda Blanco was indeed a notorious drug dealer in real life and rose to power in the 70s and 80s. Born in 1943 in Colombia, she settled in America in the 70s to flee her abusive boyfriend. In the series, Blanco arrives in Miami, initially seeking employment from a friend, but ultimately delves into drug trafficking to support her three children. According to a Vulture article, her domination of the drug trade in Miami allowed her to amass a fortune in the eight-figure range. She was arrested in 1985 for a drug trafficking case, serving a 13-year sentence in federal custody. Tragically, she was assassinated in 2012 by an unknown assailant in Medellín, Colombia.

Cultural impact

Griselda’s costume design captures an era of distinct fashion statements. From power suits to bold accessories, the cast’s wardrobe brings back quintessential 80s Colombian and Miami style. If the show is hitting some nostalgia buttons for you, Griselda and Netflix have collaborated with Foster Grant sunglasses for a new collection inspired by Vergara’s character. Staying true to the maximalism that dominated that period, the limited edition collection is comprised of four retro, oversized silhouettes. The Geo Square sunglasses, in particular, have a distinguishable octagonal frame and feature contrasting colors of crystal blue and amber tortoise-print. Overall, they’re a captivating pair that won’t look out of place perched on a 70s queenpin’s face and is a must-have for anyone looking to hop on the mob wife fashion trend.

Despite being a fresh release, Vergara’s ‘mob wife’ aesthetic is already making waves on social media. Characterized by voluminous tresses, silk blouses, faux fur coats, all manner of animal print, and gaudy gold jewelry, this micro-trend is all about opulence. Fashion Network reports that hashtags like #MobWives and #MobWife have racked up nearly 200 million views each on TikTok, and Google searches for ‘mob wife winter’ have skyrocketed by a whopping 3,850%. The show and Vergara’s impact on fashion is undeniable, with tastemakers such as Dua Lipa and Hailey Bieber joining in on the trend. Even Emily Ratajkowski donned vintage sunglasses paired with a cheetah print skirt to take part in the aesthetic.

Sofía Vergara’s powerful portrayal, along with the careful attention to detail in makeup, set design, and wardrobe, brings the characters and story to life. The design team winningly captures the glamorous style of the 70s and 80s, adding a level of authenticity to the series. With its compelling plotline, vibrant color palette, and well-developed characters, Griselda is set to captivate audiences worldwide.

Griselda was released on January 25th, 2024, and all six episodes of the miniseries are now available to stream on Netflix.
