Evacuation warnings lifted in Northern California around noon
– A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the California coast Thursday morning, sending tremors through Northern California, uprooting homes and cutting power for thousands, according to multiple reports. Authorities issued evacuation orders along the coast and parts of the Bay Area due to the threat of a tsunami.
The earthquake, recorded at 10:47 a.m., initially measured a magnitude of 6.6, but the U.S. Geological Survey revised the figure shortly after. The epicenter was located about 39 miles west of Petrolia, southwest of Eureka. A number of smaller earthquakes were recorded in the same area around the same time according to the USGS latest earthquake map.
The National Weather Service issued a tsunami warning for the entire Northern California coast, including the San Francisco Bay Area and extending into Oregon, at 11 a.m. The warning was lifted just before noon.
