Update: Man killed in motorcycle accident identified

Update:

Paso Robles Police identified the motorcyclist killed in a collision with an SUV on Friday afternoon on Highway 46 West in Paso Robles.

The motorcyclist was Barry Stephenson, 68, of Atascadero, reports Paso Robles Police Cmdr. Caleb Davis.

Original story:

–The westbound lanes of Highway 46, near Hunter Ranch Golf Course, were temporarily closed yesterday afternoon as the Paso Robles Police Department investigated a fatal collision that occurred Friday afternoon around 1:50 p.m.

The collision involved two vehicles, a Toyota SUV and a Kawasaki motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle, a 68-year old man from Atascadero, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota was not injured. The decedent’s name is currently being withheld pending family notification.

The collision is still under investigation, however it does not appear that alcohol or drugs played a factor. Witnesses said the SUV crossed Highway 46, into the westbound lanes of travel, after pulling out of the Hunter Ranch Golf Course; the driver of the motorcycle, also headed west, was unable to avoid a collision and struck the rear of the SUV. The driver of the motorcycle was thrown from his motorcycle, onto the highway, and later pronounced dead at the scene.

The Paso Robles Department of Emergency Services, California Highway Patrol, San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department, and San Luis Ambulance all assisted with the investigation.
