Update: Man drowns at Lake Lopez

The man who drowned at Lake Lopez Thursday has been identified by the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office as 47-year-old Darryl Tyler Redd of San Diego.

It’s believed Redd drowned after the catamaran he was on capsized in the Cottonwood Cove area of Lopez Lake. The Sheriff’s Underwater Search and Recovery Dive Team located the victim approximately four hours later. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the manner and cause of death.

 –On Thursday, the San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Office received a call for assistance regarding a possible drowning in the Cottonwood Cove area of Lopez Lake. Witnesses report the 47-year-old male victim from Southern California and two others went sailing on the lake on a catamaran when it capsized. The two others were able to swim safely to shore. The victim tried to swim to shore but was unsuccessful. The victim was not wearing a life jacket.

Deputies and members of the Sheriff’s Underwater Search and Recovery Dive Team responded to the lake. The dive team was able to locate the victim at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The victim’s identity is pending notification of next of kin. No foul play is suspected. The investigation is continuing.
