Master Gardeners to host free winter pruning workshop Nov. 14 at Centennial Park

Free workshop covers pruning fruit trees, roses and shrubs, plus cover cropping
– The UC Master Gardeners of San Luis Obispo County will host a free community workshop, Winter Pruning and Cover Cropping, from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 14, in the Live Oak Room at Centennial Park, 600 Nickerson Drive, in Paso Robles. Free registration is available online, and preference will be given to those who pre-register.
Participants will learn practical pruning techniques for fruit trees, roses and perennial shrubs from trained UC Master Gardener volunteers, according to the organization. They will learn how proper winter pruning supports healthy structure, spring growth and summer blooms, and they will find out how cover cropping works and what its benefits are. Weather permitting, attendees will be invited to visit the demonstration garden after the workshop to see pruning examples, talk with volunteers and gather tips for their own landscapes.
The Centennial Park Demonstration Garden is a partnership between the City of Paso Robles and the University of California Regents for the UC Master Gardener Program of San Luis Obispo County. Its goals include demonstrating water conservation, helping home gardeners be more successful and donating food to a local food pantry. The garden has eight plots, including trees, grapes and berries, lawn alternatives, a kitchen garden, a pollinator garden, wildlife habitat, California natives, and a succulent and fire safety plot. All of the plots are models for low-water gardening.
“These regular free workshops offer a special opportunity for home gardeners who have questions or want to learn more about gardening,” said Maria Murrietta, program coordinator for the UC Master Gardener Program of San Luis Obispo County.
