Middle school addresses ‘inappropriate Instagram accounts’

Accounts ‘spread hatred and are detrimental to our school culture,’ says assistant principal

– This week, Daniel Lewis Middle School Assistant Principal Monica Young sent a notice out to families regarding what she says are at least 15 Instagram accounts that are using the official Lewis Middle School name and logo but are not associated with the school.

She writes:

Lewis families,

There are currently at least 15 Instagram accounts using the LMS name and official logo which have not been approved by Lewis staff or administration. Many of these accounts specifically target students based on their race and sexuality. Some of them promote and encourage fighting amongst students on and off campus. All of them promote bullying of Lewis students and staff. These accounts spread hatred and are detrimental to our school culture.

LMS staff are working diligently to educate students about the toxicity of these accounts, to identify the owners of these accounts, and to hold students accountable for the fighting that appears in some of the videos posted.

Please take some time this weekend to review your students’ social media accounts (Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat). Talk with your children about the negative effects of posting to these accounts or sending in pictures and content to post, following the accounts, or liking their content. If your student knows of an owner of any of these accounts, please encourage them to make an anonymous tip to a teacher, counselor, or administrator. We need your support in addressing this issue at LMS.

Thank you for your continued support of our Leopard students and staff.

Sincerely,

Monica Young
Assistant Principal, Lewis Middle School
