Military and families get free admission to Jack House through Labor Day

–Military personnel and their families have free admission to the historic Jack House in San Luis Obispo from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The house was once the home of pioneering Civil War veteran Robert Edgar (R.E.) Jack.

The Jack House is one of more than 2000 museums across the country that have joined the Blue Star Museums program offering free admission to active military, including the National Guard and Reserve. The program runs from May 28 – September 3. Military families of up to five people can receive free tours of the Jack House during this period. Tours are offered Sundays between 1 – 4 p.m. Active duty military will be asked to show their DD Form 1173 or DD Form 1173-1 ID Card.

Today the Jack House is a popular venue for weddings and community gatherings. In the 1880s, the Victorian home was built solely for Jack, an influential rancher and developer, whose seafaring family hailed from Maine. After working as an accountant in New York City, Jack joined the 56th New York Infantry during the Civil War, and he eventually wound up at the Battle of Gettysburg.

Jack later relocated to California where he became an accountant and secretary and used his accounting skills to become a prominent banker, land developer, businessman and rancher. The Jack family lived in the home for 90 years. Jack’s son, Howard, donated the house to the city in 1973. Much of the family’s original furnishings, art and keepsakes remain in the house.

The Jack House is located at 536 Marsh Street in San Luis Obispo. For more information visit the Jack House website or call (805) 781-7300.
