Morro Bay Open Space Alliance announces conservation plan at Eagle Rock

Morro Bay Open Space Alliance announces conservation easement for Eagle Rock

Eagle Rock is also known as Cerrito Peak

–The Morro Bay Open Space Alliance (MBOSA) announced that it has successfully recorded a conservation easement on the deed for Eagle Rock in April 2021. The alliance concluded an agreement to purchase the conservation easement with the City of Morro Bay in 2020. The city will continue to own the parcel, but it will remain open space in perpetuity.

Beginning in fall 2017, the Morro Bay Open Space Alliance ran a fund-raising campaign to purchase a conservation easement from the City of Morro Bay on the topmost central parcel of Eagle Rock in south Morro Bay. In spring 2020, MBOSA achieved its goal of raising $265,000 to exchange for the conservation easement on the property. The project was completed in April 2021 when the easement was recorded on the deed. This conservation easement will ensure that no development occurs on this parcel and is binding on all owners, current, and future.

Eagle Rock (also known as Cerrito Peak) is an ancient volcanic dome located in southern Morro Bay. It is part of the same 24-million-year-old system that formed the nine sisters, including Morro Rock. Local Native American tribes visited the rock and used it in ceremonies eons before the current stands of eucalyptus appeared, and they still consider it sacred. Today those eucalyptus trees provide shelter to migrating monarch butterflies, as well as hawks, osprey, and owls.

By raising over $265,000 through 175 contributions large and small, MBOSA has ensured that current and future generations of Morro Bay residents will be free to climb and enjoy this unique formation in its undeveloped state.
