New DIY workshop opens at San Luis Obispo ReStore
Ribbon cutting set for Sept. 30
– Habitat for Humanity San Luis Obispo County will launch a new DIY ReMaker Space at the San Luis Obispo ReStore with a grand opening and ribbon cutting on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 4 p.m. The ReStore is located at 2790 Broad Street.
The project is supported by the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo and local donor Steve Urbani. The space is under construction and will feature a fully equipped workshop with hand and power tools. It is designed for do-it-yourself projects, furniture restoration, and cabinet assembly, offering access to those who may not have their own tools or workspace.
“I’m so excited to open our ReMaker Space — it’s a place for the community to come together, share skills, and build something meaningful with their own hands,” said Stephanie Wright, Habitat SLO ReStores Manager. “It’s all about hands-on learning and making DIY accessible to everyone. Let’s build something great — together.”
The ReMaker Space will host free workshops led by local experts and volunteer-led open hours each week.
“The Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo is proud to support Habitat for Humanity. Affordable housing is a fundamental right, and this space reflects Rotary’s commitment to ‘Service Above Self,’” said Brian A. Reynolds, President of the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo.
Habitat SLO said refurbished furniture created in the space may be sold in the ReStore to help fund its affordable housing programs. The organization is also asking community members to support the project by donating gently used tools or making monetary contributions. Requested items include sawhorses, brad nailer, jigsaw, reciprocating saw, staple gun and staples, adjustable wrenches, pliers, small levels, chisels, square or straight edge, table saw, drills, drill bits, Dremel clamps, wood burner, gloves, N95 masks, aprons, and earplugs.
Habitat SLO is seeking volunteer leaders to supervise open hours. “We’re looking for volunteers to complete our free 5-hour virtual Habitat training, which will allow them to help community members safely use power tools while working on projects,” said Colleen Stefanek, Habitat SLO Program Manager.
“Join us on Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. for the ribbon cutting and experience the launch of the DIY ReMaker Space,” Wright said. “It’s a place where creativity, community, and Habitat’s mission come together.”
Habitat for Humanity San Luis Obispo County is a nonprofit that began building homes in 2003. The organization has completed 26 homes between Cambria and Grover Beach and has built, repaired, and rehabilitated houses across the county since 1997.
