New radio site improves emergency communications in South County
– A new radio site above Avila Beach is improving emergency communications for first responders in South San Luis Obispo County, according to Cal Fire San Luis Obispo.
The Cave Landing / Ontario Ridge radio site became fully operational Feb. 26 following installation and a period of system monitoring. Officials said the site improves radio coverage for first responders operating in Avila Beach, Shell Beach, Squire Canyon, and throughout the Five Cities area.
The tower also provides improved radio service along the access road to Diablo Canyon Power Plant, where reliable communication is needed for emergency response and coordination.
Officials said several locations that previously experienced limited or inconsistent radio coverage, including areas along the Bob Jones Bike Trail and near Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort, now have stronger radio performance.
Reliable radio communications are critical for coordinating emergency response, particularly in areas with challenging terrain or limited infrastructure. With the new site in service, responders working in these areas can communicate more effectively during incidents, improving coordination, situational awareness, and public safety.
Officials said the project represents continued investment in San Luis Obispo County’s emergency communications infrastructure, ensuring the county fire department and other first responders have reliable communication tools to respond to emergencies.
