Templeton recycling grant recipients announced
-Special from the Soaring Eagle Press-
The new Templeton Community Services District (TCSD) Recycling Grants Program announced the 2014 recipients last Friday. They include:
- Vineyard Dog Park was awarded $1,400 for a program to replace plastic dog waste bags with biodegradable ones. It is estimated that this will keep at least 20,000 non-biodegradable dog bags out of the landfill.
- The Wellness Kitchen and Resource Center was awarded $2,400 for a duel program that includes replacing disposable food delivery containers with reusable glass containers. These containers are used to deliver foods to clients who are in critical need and/or undergoing treatment for disease. The second part of the grant will help the Wellness Kitchen purchase a compost tumbler in order to turn all kitchen waste to reusable compost for the garden where they grow most of the produce used by the Wellness Kitchen.
- Templeton High School (THS) was awarded $4,000 for a program to institute a food waste recycling program. The funds will be used to purchase a vermicomposting bin and other items to create a school garden that will grow produce to be used in the THS cafeteria.
- Templeton Unified School District (TUSD) was awarded $5,000 for a program to replace Styrofoam food trays with paper trays. It is estimated that the program will keep up to 105,000 Styrofoam food trays out of the local landfill.
The TCSD Recycling Grants Program made $15,000 in grants available to local businesses with proposals for programs or projects that would promote recycling in the Templeton Community. The grant program was offered through the Upper Salinas – Las Tablas Resource Conservation District (US-LTRCD) on behalf of TCSD’s Waste Management Division.
Applications were due by February 14 and award winners were scheduled to be notified by March 14. The maximum amount per grant is $5,000 and all four applicants for the 2014 grants were successful.
