North County honors war dead on Memorial Day

Paso Robles Memorial Day

The Paso Robles community will honor those who died serving in the US military with a special ceremony on Memorial Day, May 26. The annual event will be held at the Paso Robles District Cemetery, at 45 Nacimiento Lake Dr. It starts Monday at 11 a.m. The 2013 Pioneer Day Grand Marshal Norman Bridge and Queen Norma Moye are expected to attend. The Estrella Warbirds will conduct a “flyover” in vintage aircraft near the beginning of the ceremony.

Templeton Memorial Day

Templeton’s annual Memorial Day Service is hosted by Templeton American Legion Post 220 and Auxiliary Unit 220 at Templeton Cemetery. The service starts at 11 a.m. and includes a flyover by the Estrella Warbirds, followed by a patriotic presentation honoring our veterans.

At noon the Templeton American Legion Post 220 & Auxiliary Unit 220 will host an Annual Memorial Day Chicken BBQ. The barbecue will be held at Legion Hall, at 8th and S. Main. Tickets to the barbecue are limited to 300 and the event usually sells out. There may be a few still available at the door. Call Les Nye at (805) 434-1402 to reserve tickets.

Atascadero Memorial Day

On Memorial Day, the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation will hold a commemoration ceremony at noon at the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial located at the junction of Morro and Portola Roads in Atascadero.

Master of Ceremonies is Colonel Bill Hatch, USA,Retired, and current President of the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation. The ceremony will commence at noon with the posting of the colors, accompanied by an honor guard and bagpipes. This year Ms. Emy Bruzzo, the Chorale Director of the Atascadero High School Chorale will sing the National Anthem. Her High School chorale will also be performing several patriotic and sentimental songs during the ceremony.

The Estrella Warbirds will conduct a “flyover” in vintage aircraft near the beginning of the ceremony, in addition to recognition of veterans by the playing of the Armed Forces Medley. The guest speaker this year is Mr. Chuck Ward, a former Marine Corps lieutenant, followed by the Atascadero High School Chorale. A wreath will be laid by surviving family members of a fallen veteran, with the playing of Taps as a salute and farewell to those who lost their lives in service to the nation. The service will conclude with a benediction by Chaplain Bill Houston.

The Veterans Memorial Foundation welcomes all members of the public to attend to remember those who are fallen in service to the nation. There will be seating available, however parking is limited; members of the public are encouraged to arrive early enough to obtain convenient parking and seating prior to the ceremony.

There will be a Community BBQ Sponsored by the Atascadero Kiwanis Club to follow the ceremony. Cost: Adult Plate $6 Children’s Plate $4.
