North County neighborhood earns Firewise recognition
Neighborhood completed risk assessment and three-year action plan
– The Long Valley neighborhood in Atascadero has been recognized as a National Fire Protection Association Firewise USA Community, according to Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services.
The designation makes Long Valley the second community in Atascadero within the past eight months to join the national Firewise program.
Long Valley spans 1,262 acres and includes 221 homes and more than 500 residents. Over several months, residents worked with Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services to reduce wildfire risk by forming a local Firewise board, completing a wildfire risk assessment for the neighborhood, and developing a three-year action plan focused on reducing hazards and improving defensible space.
On Jan. 28, Long Valley submitted its application to the National Fire Protection Association and later received a certificate of recognition.
“This accomplishment reflects the power of neighbors working together to protect lives, property, and the environment,” said Dave Van Son, Battalion Chief. “Long Valley’s commitment sets an inspiring example for other neighborhoods in our city.”
Officials said participation in the Firewise USA program provides benefits that include increased safety and preparedness through community-wide risk assessments and mitigation planning, access to resources and support from fire agencies and organizations, eligibility for grants and funding opportunities for fuel reduction and defensible space projects, increased community engagement and awareness, and potential insurance advantages as some insurers recognize Firewise status in risk evaluations.
