Obituary for Jere Ann (Masalle) Davis, 94

Jere Ann (Masalle) Davis.

Davis was a resident of Paso Robles since 2000

– On March 10, 2021, Jere Ann (Masalle) Davis, a resident of Paso Robles since 2000, quietly passed away at home from end-stage Cerebrovascular Disease. Born the day after Christmas in Aberdeen, Washington, the only child of parents Raymond and Letitia Masalle, Jere was 94.

Our life paths crossed in early January 1957 in Aberdeen, Washington. Jere was employed as a switchboard operator with Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Company and I was a central office telephone equipment installer for the Western Electric Company in Washington and Oregon. We began dating while I worked at that site and continued to do so on weekends and holidays when I would return to Aberdeen. Jere introduced me to the Western Washington activities of razor clam digging, salmon fishing, walks through the rain forests, scenic drives along the rugged coastline…and dancing.

We were married on March 28 of the following year, and on March 3, 1959, our son Jay Alan was born. We moved to Seattle, Washington in December of that year where two years later daughter Lisa Rae joined the family. For ten years Jere ran the household while volunteering at the kids’ school and as a driver for the local American Cancer Society chapter shuttling patients to and from doctor visits and treatments.

1970 saw us relocate to San Jose, California where we spent the next nineteen years. Jere continued her household management, volunteered at the schools and with the Telephone Pioneers Organization Infant Hearing Assessment program testing the hearing capabilities of newborns at the local hospital. She fully embraced the California lifestyle of camping, water skiing, snow skiing, bowling, making a host of new friends and, of course, dancing. When the kids left for college, Jere returned to work with Western Electric Company for five more years.

Following an early retirement, we moved to a new home in the Sierra-Nevada foothill community of Volcano, California in 1990. There Jere honed her bowling skills and collected a trove of pins and patches for her talent. As a member of the local Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, Jere led annual fundraising drives. She also rekindled her interest in camping and RVing and we traveled extensively throughout the West and Midwest states, Canada and Mexico.

In 2000 we left Volcano for the Central Coast to be nearer Lisa, then in San Luis Obispo. We were fortunate to find the Paso Robles Quail Run Sr. Estates community in the midst of a major expansion…including a huge new dance floor in the clubhouse. Jere loved the look and feel of Quail Run and the prospect of many new friends and activities it presented.

Three years into life here her wish for a grandchild was answered when Jay and wife Ruth brought Griffin Collier Davis into the family. At that point she often said she had two goals. The first one was to live longer than her maternal grandmother who died at age 93 and the second was to attend Griffin’s high school graduation. She realized the first, but missed the second by just three months. Also missed, by just 18 days, was her 63rd wedding anniversary. Jere was predeceased by her grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, first cousins and daughter. An amazing woman, wife, mother and grandmother.

We’ll dance again someday.

-Ray Davis
