Obituary of Donald A. Palus, 80 

Donald A. Palus

April 13, 1942 – March 20, 2022

– Commander Donald August Palus, US Navy, 79, of San Miguel passed away peacefully on March 20, 2022. Don, known to his family as “Gus,” was born on April 13, 1942, in Pensacola, Florida to the late George and Thelma Palus. He is survived by his sister Karen Couzens of Portland, Oregon.

Donald graduated from the University of the Pacific, San Francisco School of Dentistry in 1969 and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Naval Dental Corps. He served on active duty in the Republic of Vietnam and as a reserve officer in multiple naval hospitals throughout the world. His last assignment was a special mission to evaluate US military assistance to Ukraine. Awards and decorations include the Naval Commendation Medal, the National Defense Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.

In addition to being an accomplished dentist, Don was an avid equestrian, military historian, world traveler, and life member of the US Naval Institute. He especially treasured his rides and hunts with the Santa Ynez Valley Hounds.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United States Naval Institute Foundation, 291 Wood Road, Beach Hall, Annapolis, MD 21402.
