Douglas Eddy Marshall
July 10, 1936 – April 24, 2025
– Douglas Eddy Marshall, of Scotts Valley, CA, passed away peacefully at home in the Santa Cruz Mountains on April 24, 2025, surrounded by his beloved wife and children. He was 88 years old.
Doug was born on July 10, 1936, in Santa Barbara, California, to Helen Eddy Marshall and Robert Lawrence Marshall. He was the younger of two sons; his older brother, Lawrence James Marshall, preceded him in death. His grandparents were Joseph Wesley Eddy and Henrietta Petersen Eddy, of Templeton, California, and William Amos Marshall and Nora Sullivan Marshall, of Whitewater Wisconsin.
Doug’s early years were shaped by small-town life in Cambria, and Shandon, California, where his parents ran the Shandon Mercantile—a general store that sold everything from groceries to gasoline. He graduated from Shandon High School in 1954, where he played basketball and baseball and took pride in representing his rural school community. During his high school years, Doug was a proud member of “The Outlaws,” Shandon High’s basketball team that became known throughout the region for winning the state championships. The bond with his teammates remained strong throughout his life, with Doug maintaining close friendships with his fellow Outlaws for over seven decades.
He went on to study at Taft College and later transferred to the University of California, Berkeley, graduating in 1958 with a degree in history. At Cal, he joined the Kappa Alpha Order and formed many lifelong friendships. His love for Cal never faded.
After college, Doug joined the U.S. Navy, graduated from Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, and was commissioned in December 1958. He served with distinction aboard the USS Plymouth Rock (LSD-29) and later on the staff of Amphibious forces, proudly serving under Rear Admiral John S. McCain, Sr.
Doug went on to earn his Juris Doctor from UC Hastings College of the Law in 1965, passing the California Bar Exam the same year. Over the course of his legal career, he served as counsel for the Regents of the University of California, practiced as a Deputy District Attorney for Santa Clara County, held a private practice, and ultimately retired from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
In 1965, Doug married Paula Dean Quick, and together they had two children, Paul Timson Marshall and Nell Justine Marshall. Later in life, he met and married the love of his life, Laura Lorraine Moler, on July 8, 1994. Together they shared 31 joyful years filled with companionship, laughter, and deep love.
After retiring, Doug and Laura settled in the Santa Cruz Mountains, where Doug found great joy in the natural beauty that surrounded them. His passion for landscaping transformed their mountain property into a showcase of his vision and craftsmanship. Doug lovingly designed gardens with native plants, built stone walls and winding paths, and created peaceful outdoor spaces that blended seamlessly with the natural terrain.
He was a devoted family man, a passionate historian, and a loyal Cal Bear. He was a beloved neighbor and friend, always ready with a story, a smile, or a spirited debate about history or politics.
Doug is survived by his cherished wife Laura; his children Paul and Nell; his son-in-law Chris Bowlby; his grandchildren Logan and Riley; his sister-in-law Margaret Marshall; and his many nieces and nephews. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
A burial will be held on June 12th at Templeton Cemetery in Templeton, California, followed by a celebration of Doug’s life on June 15th in Campbell, California. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Doug’s name to a charity of your choice.
