Obituary of Loretta Joyce Payne, 87

    Loretta (Lori) Joyce Dyar.

    – Loretta (Lori) Joyce Dyar was born on September 13, 1938, in Delano, California. She passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.

A proud fourth-generation Californian, Loretta carried deep roots in the Central Valley. She was the eldest granddaughter and niece of the founding Villard and Panero families of Delano and remained closely connected to her extended family of great-aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout her life. She also cherished her long United States heritage through her father’s Dyar and Scott families and was honored as a Daughter of the American Revolution.

Afflicted by polio at a young age, Loretta never allowed her challenges to define her. She pursued her passions with determination, embracing her love for dance and theater throughout her school years. She graduated from Delano High School in 1956 and attended Bakersfield College before transferring to San Jose State University, where she majored in home economics with an emphasis on teaching. It was there that she met the love of her life, Bob Payne, with whom she shared 65 devoted years of marriage.

Loretta and Bob were married on July 2, 1960, and began their life together in the Bay Area, where they welcomed two of their three children. In 1966, they moved to Arroyo Grande, California, where Loretta worked as a part-time librarian in the Lucia Mar Unified School District. In 1971, following the birth of their third child, the family moved to their home on Huasna Road, where they would reside for 45 years.

Loretta dedicated herself wholeheartedly to her family, nurturing her three children and creating a warm and structured home. She passed on her love of sewing, baking, cooking, and food preservation. Deeply involved in the 4-H Youth Program, she served as the El Camino 4-H Club leader for 25 years, guiding countless young people. She also contributed as a home arts judge at the Mid-State and Santa Barbara County Fairs. In addition, she was the ever-reliable “taxi driver” for horseback riding lessons, piano practices, and sporting events.

Her faith was central to her life. Loretta was an active member of Saint Paul’s Catholic Church for over 40 years, where she served as a catechism teacher, Bible study leader, and gracious host for Sunday Mass brunches. She was, in every sense, a devoted wife, mother, and pillar of her community.

In her personal time, Loretta enjoyed involvement in Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, the Arroyo Grande Lions Club, a non-denominational Bible study group, and swimming at Avila Hot Springs.

Loretta was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob Payne; her mother, Virginia Villard Dyar; and her father, Norval Dyar. She is survived by her sister, Micheline Tippit; her daughter, Karen Franzone; her sons, Kevin Payne and Kurt Payne; as well as two sons-in-law, one daughter-in-law, eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life Mass will be held on June 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church in San Luis Obispo, with a reception to follow. A graveside blessing and interment will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Pine Mountain Cemetery in Atascadero.

Loretta’s family will miss her deeply but take comfort in knowing she is reunited with Bob, her true love. She lived a full and meaningful life, surrounded by the love of her family and community.
