Stanley Mello.

– Stanley Mello was an amazing and caring husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. He died peacefully in his sleep on August 11, 2022, at his home at the age of 85.

He was the oldest son of Joseph M. Mello and Lydia Opal Carlisle Mello and was raised in the Los Osos Valley.

Stan attended the Los Osos Valley School, Mission School, San Luis Obispo Junior and Senior High School, and San Luis Obispo Junior College. He grew up on his grandfather’s ranch, working beside his father and uncles in the fields from the age of 12 until completing his education. After high school, Stan joined the Air Force, serving as a jet mechanic. He was an integral part of the mechanical crew that accompanied President Eisenhower’s tour of Europe. Following his tour of service, he joined the San Luis Obispo City Fire Department serving his community for 29 years, retiring as Captain in 1991.

Stan was a member of the Native Sons of the Golden West. He was proud of his Portuguese heritage and was a member of many Portuguese organizations.

Stan could accomplish anything he set his mind to do. If there was something that needed, fixing, building, or restoring he was your go-to guy. He had a great love of flying and built two small one-place experimental airplanes and restored his pride and joy, a 1954 Chevy Bel Air 4-door sedan. Stan was a cowboy, participating in six Caballeros de San Luis Obispo horseman rides in the hills around San Luis Obispo County. He was a rancher and loved being on the family ranch where he ran a small calf-cow operation; many fun times and much laughter were shared at branding get-togethers. He was always ready for a hunting, fishing or camping trip and enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his loving wife of 31 years, Sally; children Denise Lemons (Dennis), Michael Mello (Pamela), Curtis Mello, Allyson Schwartzenberger (Justin). Stan was older brother to sisters Frances Chaves (Joseph), Loreen Fackenthall (Bill), Linda Bourne, Mary Lu Hop (Pete) and sister-in-law, Nancy Kelly. He was a proud Grandpa and Papa to Dalton, Cameron, Josh, Noah, Leah, Cynthia, Pete and great-grandson Ryan as well as many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Stan will be greatly missed and fondly remembered for his sense of humor, his dedication to his family and friends and his loyalty to his community and country.

A celebration of life will be held in his honor at a later date.
