Obituary of Winton Dwight Winslow, 85

Winton Dwight Winslow.

– Dwight Winslow, 85, of Paso Robles died peacefully, with loved ones by his side, on Monday, Aug. 7, while vacationing in Alaska. He finally lost his battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was determined to live his life to the fullest until the very end, and he did.

Winton was born in Swansea, Mass. on Aug. 31, 1937. He is preceded in death by his parents William Henry Jr and Eleanor Winslow, and his three brothers William, Robert, and Gordon. At age 17 he joined the US Marines, which was one of his proudest achievements. After he left the Marines, he met his future wife Muriel and followed her to California. They married shortly thereafter and settled in the San Fernando Valley where they brought up their four young children before moving to Valencia, where they lived until Muriel’s retirement in 2004. Their final years were spent in Paso Robles, close to family.

He retired at the age of 81. When Muriel passed, Winton was heartbroken, but continued on, finding solace in volunteering, exercising, and enjoying his family.

Winton’s special personality, vibrancy, and intelligence drove his many passions. He was keenly interested in technology, and always had to have the latest and greatest Apple product. He was extremely disciplined, and everything he pursued he did with ambition and determination. He ran marathons into his 50s, and until the very end of his life continued a daily regimen of walking, spin classes, and water aerobics, where he made many good friends. He loved to tell stories of his childhood misadventures and was passionate about football, music, wine, the stock market, his koi pond, photography, art, and most importantly, time spent with his friends and family. Winton’s qualities included unending generosity, kindness, and laughter. He was always there for his family, supporting his children and grandchildren every step of the way.

He is survived by his four children, Renee (Rex) West, (Atascadero), Marc Winslow, (Montrose, Col.), Suzanne (Robert) Winslow, (San Luis Obispo), and Denise (John) Nielsen, (Atascadero). He is survived by nine grandchildren, Estephany (Jonathan) Lopez, Katie (TJ) Herman, Jacob (Kelly) West, Kyle (Jennae) West, Casey (Yessica) West, Christiana Nielsen, Eva Hogue, John Nielsen, and Philip Winslow. He is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren, his brothers-in-law, Norman and Roland Boutin, and nieces and nephews in California and Massachusetts. Lastly, Winton is survived by his close friend & companion, Beth Hemenway, who helped him find joy in life again.

A graveside service for Winton will be held Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Paso Robles District Cemetery, 45 Nacimiento Lake Dr, Paso Robles, CA 93446.

Following the graveside service will be a celebration of life at 1 p.m. at Traditions At River Oaks, 680 The Esplanade, Paso Robles, CA 93446.
