Old Time Music Gathering coming to the Pozo Saloon
–Fiddles, banjos, guitars, and mandolins will take over the Pozo Saloon on Veterans Day weekend for the first ever Pozo Old Time Music Gathering. Musicians from up and down the West Coast will gather to socialize and make music in the style of those who first settled Pozo in the 1800s. Local players will host open jams from 11:30 – 6:30 on both days at the saloon. The music is free an in accord with the community-based nature of old-time music, there will be no stage performances.
In addition to the jam sessions, two workshops will be offered. National Champion Buck Dancer Ruth Alpert will teach Flatfoot and Buck Dancing. These dance forms are the percussive, solo styles that accompany Southern Appalachian Mountain Music.
David Bragger and Susan Platz will offer a twin fiddle workshop. David is a renowned performer and teacher of Old Time Music on a variety of stringed instruments. He is the artistic director of the Santa Barbara Old-Time Fiddlers’ Convention and owner of the Old Time Tiki Parlour. Susan Platz is a superb fiddler who records and performs with Bragger. There is a $25 fee for this workshop.
The first ever Pozo Saloon Old Time Music Gathering was the brainchild of Atascadero-based banjo maker Jerry James. This music is the same entertainment that early pioneers brought with them when they settled this country. Even today, musicians of all ages have fallen in love with old-time music because it’s acoustic, rhythmic and fun to play.
This event is free and family-friendly. Food and beverages will be available at the Pozo Saloon. Camping is available at nearby Santa Margarita Lake.
Information is available on the Pozo Saloon Old Time Gathering Facebook page.
