Update: One dead, one badly injured in rollover collision on Highway 46

Update posted April 28

–California Highway Patrol has provided the following updated details regarding the fatal collision that occurred Saturday:

On April 25, 2020, at approximately 7:20 p.m. Templeton Area Officers were dispatched to a solo vehicle crash with injuries on State Route (SR) 46, just west of Gruenhagen Flat Road. When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a black Volvo 850 sedan located on its wheels approximately 100 feet over an embankment covered in heavy brush. At the scene, physical evidence indicated the Volvo had been traveling at a high rate of speed.
Upon arrival, the officers traversed the descending embankment to the crash scene. At the scene of the crash, the officers located a 26-year-old male who had been ejected from the vehicle. The male had sustained major injuries and was subsequently transported via ground ambulance to Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo. Due to the male’s state of consciousness, each attempt to interview the male on-scene and later at the hospital was unsuccessful.

Two Cal Fire trucks arrived on the scene along with one ambulance, and two San Luis Obispo Sheriff deputies. A thorough search of the area was conducted by all on-scene personnel; as a result, no additional occupants were located.

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff Deputies canvased the scene utilizing Cal Fire’s handheld Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera to locate possible heat sources emitted from any other occupants. No additional heat sources were identified nor were any additional occupants located within the vicinity. An examination of the Volvo did not produce any physical evidence to suggest there would have been more than one occupant of the vehicle.

In the late afternoon of April 26, 2020, investigators learned another person had been in the vehicle. At approximately 5:09 p.m., officers returned to the crash scene and conducted another search. At 5:14, an officer located a female subject lying in a rock-laden culvert ditch under vegetation. The female subject had sustained severe head trauma and was deceased. Due to the uneven terrain, thick brush, tall grass, limited lighting conditions, and the female subject being in an inconspicuous location, she was not located during the initial response and search of the crash scene.

This collision is still under investigation but at this time, there is no indication to believe that alcohol was a contributing factor in this traffic collision.

–On Saturday, at approximately 7:20 p.m., 25-year-old Brittany Muldrow of Tulare was driving a black Volvo sedan westbound on Highway 46, west of Gruenhagen Flats Road at what California Highway Patrol reports was a high rate of speed. A 26-year-old, Najee Mims from Hanford, CA, was in the passenger seat of the vehicle.

For unknown reasons, Muldrow lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle traveled into the median before traveling across westbound lanes and off the north road edge. The vehicle rolled multiple times as it continued down a dirt and grass decline. Due to the fact that both Muldrow and Mims were unrestrained, both were ejected, according to CHP.

Muldrow sustained fatal injuries and Mims sustained major injuries as a result of the collision.

No further details are available at this time.
