One small local business surviving coronavirus
Boyd’s Tobacco & Elegant Gifts offering 20-percent off most goods
Boyd’s Tobacco & Elegant Gifts, a North County shop offering premium hand-rolled cigars, pipe tobacco, and luxury gifts, is committed to enduring these difficult times and economic challenges. With that said, this is one small business continuing on.
As early as March 17 this year, with news of the COVID-19 outbreaks across the world and here in the U.S. Boyd’s took immediate action to maintain the health and wellness of employees and customers alike. The first step was to immediately close all access and use of the cigar lounge adjacent to the retail portion of Boyd’s, followed with a supply run to obtain gloves and sanitizer for all employees. This action was taken prior to the announcement from the California Governor’s Office on March 19 which issued the “Stay at Home” order.
Following the Stay at Home order, Boyd’s closed business operations. Employees stayed working by utilizing the “downtime” to complete a store inventory. At that time, communications began with the Paso Robles Police Department, SLO County COVID Enforcement, and Boyd’s Tobacco to discuss issues like essential versus nonessential businesses.
On April, the county approved the reopening of Boyd’s on a restricted basis. Limitations being things like phone-in orders and curbside pick-up only, compliance with social distancing, no public allowed in the store, and strict age verification procedures.
Since that time, Boyd’s has remained open with limitations and modified hours of operation. All cigars and pipe tobacco and handled with gloves and put into sealed poly-zip bags, and customers are always offered a pump of hand sanitizer at front door pick-up. Sanitizing of all door handles, light switches, phones, and keyboards are also continually maintained.
In understanding the difficulty of these times and to show appreciation to all, there is a month-long promotion running for 20-percent off all products with the exception of cigarettes. Certainly, we could all use any break we can get right now.
Sales, of course, have slowed substantially due to the current challenges, the company reports. Boyd’s, however, will continue its 20-plus years in business with preparedness to adapt as the state allows. As soon as businesses begin to reopen, with modified restrictions, Boyd’s team is prepared to make changes that may include things like limiting the number of customers allowed in the store, limiting humidor use to one customer at a time, keeping the cigar lounge closed until it is safe to reopen, and maintaining safety and sanitary conditions.
