Opinion: Cultural rot, who bears the brunt?

Ron Cuff riverbed fire problem

– In the mosaic of American society, cracks are appearing. Signs of decline are ubiquitous: help wanted signs outnumber job seekers, obesity rates approach unprecedented heights, and addiction pervades not just substances but also digital realms like pornography and social media. The most tragic casualties of this cultural decay are our children, whose innocence is eroded by societal neglect and unchecked indulgence.

We must confront the uncomfortable truth: our nation’s core values are under siege, and the toll is felt most keenly by our youngest citizens. The refusal to ratify the International Rights of the Child speaks volumes about our priorities. How can a great nation thrive when it fails to safeguard the most vulnerable among us?

Economically, we teeter on the brink. A national debt that surpasses our defense budget threatens to bankrupt our future. We borrow recklessly, fund unnecessary bureaucracies, and absorb the costs of illegal immigration while neglecting our own. The burden of this fiscal irresponsibility will fall squarely on the shoulders of our children.

Our education system, once a beacon of opportunity, now churns out graduates ill-equipped for the challenges ahead. Basic skills are increasingly scarce among school leavers, condemning another generation to struggle in an unforgiving world.

Meanwhile, bloated government programs flourish, sustaining a dependent class and draining resources that could fuel genuine progress. This unsustainable trajectory imperils our collective future and dims the prospects of our progeny.

As a member of the baby boomer generation, I shoulder my share of responsibility for this impending crisis. We must act decisively to course-correct before it’s too late. It is incumbent upon us to reclaim our national narrative, prioritize the well-being of our children, and restore the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

Let us not be remembered as the generation that fiddled while America burned from within. Let us be the catalysts for renewal, the architects of a more just and resilient society. Our children deserve nothing less.
