Cuesta College play, Refried Elvis, heads to Hawaii

–An original production of Cuesta College’s Drama Department has been selected by the Kennedy Center to be featured at the 2016 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in Oahu, HI. The cast and crew of Refried Elvis, which re-imagines the origins of rock and roll during Elvis Presley’s rise to fame, will travel to the festival February 9-16, 2016, where they will perform on the campus of the University of Hawaii in Honolulu.

“Four productions were chosen from our region to perform at the festival and Refried Elvis is the only original play that was selected, so I am incredibly proud of my students and this production,” said Refried Elvis director and Cuesta College faculty member Bree Valle. Region VIII includes Nevada, California, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Guam and Hawaii. According to Valle, the four festival performances were selected after Region VIII representatives attended the various fall productions around the region.

In addition to performing, eight of the attending students will be competing for the Irene Ryan Actor Scholarships, which provide $3,500 to two student performers wishing to further pursue their education.

Leading up to the festival, Refried Elvis will return to the Cuesta College Cultural and Performing Arts Main Stage during the following dates and times:

  • Thursday, January 21, 7:30 p.m.
  • Friday, January 22, 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, January 23, 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, January 24, 2:00 p.m.

“The money raised from ticket sales will go toward funding the travel costs for the 25 students and two staff members who will be traveling to Hawaii,” said Valle. “We are also excited to give the public another chance to catch this great show.”

This is the second time the Kennedy Center has selected a Cuesta College Drama Department original production to be performed at a theater festival. Earlier this year, pool ’63 was selected by the Kennedy Center as the United States representative at the 2015 International University Theatre Festival in Mexico City. Originally debuting in December 2013, pool ’63 focused on the racial unrest during the civil rights movement in Alabama during 1963.
