Overnight lane closure on Highway 101 planned next week

Access to Wellsona Road will remain open with detours in place

    – Travelers will encounter alternating lane closures in both directions of U.S. 101 near Wellsona Road on Monday, Sept. 8, from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., according to Caltrans.

The closures are part of an ongoing $12.2 million project to construct an undercrossing and frontage road at the intersection of U.S. 101 and Wellsona Road. Caltrans said the work is needed to adjust temporary barriers and delineation for the project’s stage 3 configuration. One lane will remain open in each direction during the overnight work.

Stage 3 includes construction of the northbound bridge and is scheduled to run from Sept. 8 through mid-January 2026.

Access to Wellsona Road from U.S. 101 will remain unchanged during this stage. Southbound motorists will continue to access Wellsona Road (west) directly, while northbound motorists will use a detour. Southbound motorists will reach Wellsona Road (east) via detour, and northbound motorists will continue to access it directly through the right turn lane.

The project will add a new undercrossing beneath U.S. 101, south of the existing intersection, to eliminate left turns across traffic. It will include a 112-foot-long bridge. A frontage road will also be built to connect the undercrossing with Wellsona Road on both sides of the highway.

Caltrans said the project is intended to reduce the number and severity of collisions at the intersection. A detour is in place for bicycle riders. The San Paso Truck Stop will remain open and accessible.

The contractor for the project is CalPortland Construction of Santa Maria. Construction is expected to be complete in early 2026.
