Anti-abortion float stirs controversy at 4th of July parade

    Anti abortion float

Float allowed to participate in parade after brief hold up

–Members of the Abolitionist Society of San Luis Obispo met resistance Monday when they arrived with an anti-abortion-themed float at a 4th of July parade in Templeton.

According to Abolitionist Society of San Luis Obispo volunteer director Danny Ehinger, parade organizers attempted to block the float from entering the parade after finding the subject matter revolved around abortion, and featured posters of fetuses in the womb.

Ehinger said that the float was “Very patriotic, and purposely not-offensive or graphic.” Several parade attendees said the subject matter was inappropriate and offensive, “This divisive and negative display did nothing to encourage neighborliness, patriotism, cooperation, and general positive will,” says Kelly Reed Daulton of Templeton. Daulton says that the float was a violation of her rights as a parent to introduce sex education to her children at her discretion. “If we are to protect sex-ed in schools, we also need to protect it within any type of city or state sponsored event,” she said. “You are certainly allowed to voice your opinion, but the 4th of July parade is not an appropriate venue,” said Atascadero resident Jody Chase.

The parade was put on, as always, by the Templeton Kiwanis Club. The all-volunteer club says it tries to steer clear of political controversy. “They took advantage of Templeton and they committed fraud,” said parade organizer and Kiwanis Club member Bill Pelfrey. He said that Ehinger was purposely vague on his application, and that the Kiwanis Club had thought the subject matter revolved around the emancipation of slaves. He said that he called Ehinger the day before the parade and asked if the float was going to be about abortion and Ehinger said no.

On the application, Ehinger listed the description of the float as: Anti abortion float templeton

The Abolitionist Society of San Luis Obispo County is happy to present our float, “Where the Spirit of God is There is Freedom ~ Let Freedom Ring!” Our hope is to create a juxtaposition between the freedom we hold in our ideal and the freedom that is still being withheld to so many around the world. With the flag of our country flying over an 8′ statue of Lady Liberty we see the ideal of American freedom we hold in our minds. At the base of the float we see those still in need of being liberated. With the Liberty Bell following and ringing out to call our nation out of its slumber and to attention. To wake the nation with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Join us in the ongoing fight for freedom!

Ehinger said that he filled out the form with the necessary fields, but didn’t go further as to explaining the subject matter. “I put all the requested info on the form,” said Ehinger. There are 11 listed rules and guidelines on the parade entry form, and item six reads, “All political candidates are welcome, but no campaign signs or distribution of political material allowed along the parade route. A sign stating name of the office sought by the candidate will be allowed.”

The group was not denied until the morning of the parade, when the organizers saw what the float was displaying. Pelfrey said that the float was covered when they arrived, and the party was not carrying any signs. Once they removed the cover, the organizers tried to block the float from entering in the parade, and at that point sheriff’s deputies got involved.

Sheriff’s Commander Ken Conway responded to help mediate the dispute. There were no legal grounds for him to arrest the group or order them to leave, so he requested that the group dissemble and not participate, but pointed out that there was no clause in the parade’s rules or guidelines that allowed the right to refusal. “Commander Conway was able to get both sides to agree to allow the float in the parade as long as it was not graphic in nature or explicitly offensive,” said Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Tony Cipolla.

“They had the sheriff ask them to withdraw from the parade that morning and the anti-abortion organization people aggressively refused,” said Templeton Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sarah Maggelet. “Rather than cancel the entire parade or risk an ugly or potentially violent scene, and absent of language in the application that specifically states that any entry can be removed for any reason at any time by Kiwanis Club, the sheriff’s hands were tied and unfortunately the group forced their way into the line up.”

Pelfrey said that the group forced their way into the lineup after being skipped by parade organizers, and when he saw that they joined the parade, he allowed them to continue rather than stopping the entire parade or causing a potentially violent scene. Pelfrey, who has been running the parade for almost three decades, said that this is the first of such incidents, “It’s the biggest mess in 28 years.”

Ehinger says that he and other volunteers wanted to take the opportunity to spread their message in a very public way, and had been looking at entering in the parade for many years. He pointed out that other political floats were allowed to attend, such as floats for specific candidates. He said the theme of the float was, “Where the spirit of god is there is freedom, let freedom ring.” “We put together a beautiful and powerful float exposing that American supposed freedom is responsible for allowing millions of unborn humans to be murdered,” he said.

The theme of the parade was, “Let Freedom Ring.” Abortion Abolitionists believe that unborn fetuses should be treated with the same freedom and rights as any other American, whereas those who disagree say that anti-abortion laws would limit freedoms and rights of women to decide what is best for them, their bodies and their situations. “Women faced with an unwanted, unplanned, or potentially dangerous pregnancy do not feel free,” said Daulton. “If we are to celebrate freedom in this parade, we ought to celebrate giving women the right to choose what happens to their bodies.”

The club will be meeting at 12 p.m. on Friday in Templeton at McPhee’s Restaurant to discuss drafting up new, clearer rules and guidelines for the parade.

Is there any thing that is not offensive to communist hoodlums?`

    John Whitford

I agree with the Abolitionist Society of San Luis Obispo. Their message was a good one and presented in a manner that was not offensive. It was the loud mouth liberals who caused the uproar.

    Jo-Ann Mecham Davis

I did not like this in our parade!

    Dianne Jackson

Yes, abortion is offensive and inappropriate.

    David Hanush

But had there been a Gay-Pride float and I objected, nobody would have cared. It's only when the thin-skinned liberals object that it becomes an issue.

    Deborah Wiest

The squeaky wheel always gets the attention and liberals do a lot of squeaking. How in God's name did this float cause any harm to your right to sex education in the schools? Since when has sex education been equated with abortion rights?

    Oddette Augustus

That float was terrible and inappropriate. Not a celebrate of freedom or liberty It actually represented a denial of freedom for women's rights to control their bodies.

    Julia Mercado

This is tacky and heartless of this group as this topic can be sensitive to others. Everyone is intitled to their own beliefs but not at a 4th of July parade… This group needs to be more respectful to public even seeing them on the corners of big intersections with their signs is ridiculous.

    Gina Sullins Williams

This type of float did not belong in a parade that is supposed to get people to cheer and smile. This disgusting float did the opposite and was extremely offensive and did not belong here. Maybe at a rally in san francisco but not a sweet small town parade. I then had to be questioned by my young children what abortion is and that is not the conversation i want to have at a holiday parade. Way too controversial and ugly and creepy. Im glad templeton didnt condone this and will be changing the entry rules. We have been going to this parade for 15 years and never been offended by anything. i dont care if your pro life or pro choice, this was totally inappropriate and uncalled for with so many children present.

    Valerie Rosenquist McGill

I can't believe all the HOOP-LA over this…GEEZE PEOPLE…I read what the people stated as their float and what it stood for and that's exactly what it stood for. FREEDOM for the UNBORN as well as everyone else in America. It was a celebration of Freedom for All. People need to realize a PICTURE OF AN UNBORN BABY is simply that…an unborn baby. And this just shows that pictures of unborn babies need to be seen sooner in life and more often in schools and not made to be some hush hush thing that should only be seen behind closed doors. It reminds me of how dads used to not be let into hospitals when their wives were having babies cause that was a no no…well today most dads go into the hospital rooms for deliveries and even help out. I guess this is one of those things that needs to become more common place so people won't view it as something icky or shocking …Its just a picture of a human baby after all…come on people, get over it…and if you are worried about the children seeing it well you shouldn't. Just tell the children its a picture of a little tiny baby before it is born…simple as that, they will go "oh" and go on with their day..Its the adults here that are blowing this up way out of proportion…don't make this a big thing…cause it doesn't have to be. Do you do this about gay pride parades across the nation? Hmmm, the way the men dress and make up themselves??? Is that appropriate for children to see?? Do you do this about Mardi Gra parades across the nation? The way they dress and make themselves up and flash themselves? Is that appropriate for children to see?? Hmmmm?????

    Valerie Rosenquist McGill

EXACTLY DEBORAH….When someone mentioned SEX EDUCATION…I thought , what in the world did this have to do with Sex Education…absolutely nothing…its a do-gone picture of a little unborn human life…simple as that…people need to grow up and get over this and realize it is nothing more than that. They need to appreciate what an unborn human life looks like and stop acting like its something horrible to look at .

    Valerie Rosenquist McGill

EXACTLY RIGHT DAVID…These same people raising Cane over a picture of an unborn baby probably say nothing of the discusting way men dress and make them selves up in Gay pride parades or Mardi Gra parades.

    Valerie Rosenquist McGill

Exactly right John…people need to stop making more of this float than it was…simply stating that the unborn baby is free too, just like all Americans.

    Valerie Rosenquist McGill

JoAnn, there are a lot of things I don't like in parades but I have to put up with it…example Gay Pride Parades and the disgusting way some of the men dress or basically walk around undressed and the way they make themselves up and they are out there for young children to see…I bet the children looking at the freaky way they are dressed up is more confusing for them than looking at a picture of an unborn baby…And Mardi Gra parades disgust me as well.

    Valerie Rosenquist McGill

It was stating that unborn babies are free and have rights as well…that's the opinion of a lot of people…someone has to stand up for the rights of the unborn humans…millions have been murdered over the years since Roe vs Wade…its like the Holocaust…Just think of how horrific it would look to see a pile of the millions of unborn babies that have been aborted, it would be a horrific site, just like the horrific site of the Holocaust bodies all piled up…At least the photo on the parade float was a photo of a life inside a mommies womb, not an aborted little babies body all torn apart…which has nothing to do with it being the womans body…it is a seperate body with a seperate DNA…with a separate heart and soul and eyes and legs and all the other body parts that belong to the unborn baby.

    Valerie Rosenquist McGill

AMEN….that is what people should be talking about instead of a picture of an unborn baby being offensive…abortion and the aftermath of the baby all torn apart..that's offensive. Thank you for pointing that out.

    Valerie Rosenquist McGill

I think it's tacky and hartless to abort a baby and tear up its body parts to get it out…I have to put up with Gay Pride parades and look at all the disgusting ways men dress up and put on all the makeup and wigs and prance around or wear hardly nothing at all…and the Mardi Gra parades are disgusting as well yet they go on across the nation every year…all that is way more disgusting that a photo of a precious unborn baby and how it looks inside its mommy.

    Jo-Ann Mecham Davis

Where you at the parade to witness the float?

    Jo-Ann Mecham Davis

Where you at the parade to witness the float?

    Valerie Rosenquist McGill

Jo-Ann Mecham Davis No, I just saw the two posted photos and read what the group said on their sign up sheet. What else did thay do that would have made it seem unappropriate..than the photo and the words on the back, which neither were unapproriate to me..

    Julia Mercado

Valerie Rosenquist McGill learn how to spell to begin if you're going to go off over my comment… I've worked in family planning clinic to prevent pregnancy you have no idea what most people that abort go through or deal with and the decisions aren't easy. Respecting a holiday would be appropriate!! Anti abortion is super disrespectful at a family /community parade. Let people be Gay, let people abort it's not you're life or body!!

    Danny Ehinger

    Thank you!

    Danny Ehinger

Julia Mercado you help murder children…..it is not surprising the truth hurts you. Please stop helping people murder their children.

    Wayne Groover

People do enough cheering and smiling. This is why the nation is headed for hell in a handbasket. We bury our heads in the sand our pack into a stadium or stare at our t.v. screens while our little weak voiceless neighbor down the street is being hated and butchered to death by the very ones who are supposed to love her. We live in a nation of self centered cowards and hypocrites.

    Conner Haines

Freedom for the pre-born! Praise God for men and women that stand up for those who have no voice!

    Danny Ehinger

The founders of our nation, in the Deceleration of Independence, called the RIGHT to LIFE a "SELF-EVIDENT CERTAIN INALIENABLE" right. Those two words, "Certain Inalienable", are enough to overturn Roe vs. Wade. The reason Roe vs. Wade is not being overturned is also found in our Deceleration of Independence here, "We the People".

We the people are the reason abortion continues. We the People have turned our eyes from justice and freedom to licentiousness and greed in a lust for self.

Abortion will be Abolished when We the People turn from our sin and turn toward God as the founders did. Please Join an Abolitionist society near you and declare your independence from wickedness!

I understand not wanting to expose young children to things that are unpleasant, like the murder of little babies. So how about if we stop subjecting these little unborn victims to the brutality that is abortion? Why should they have to endure something that you don't want your children to even know about?

    Danny Ehinger

“Women faced with an unwanted, unplanned, or potentially dangerous pregnancy do not feel free,” said Daulton. “If we are to celebrate freedom in this parade, we ought to celebrate giving women the right to choose what happens to their bodies.”

We are fighting for unborn baby women to have the right to THEIR bodies.

It is clear that Daulton dehuminises the unborn as less than human. This is the issue folks. People hate the unborn and justify their murder with ignorant aguments like this.

    Julia Mercado

Not all family planning clinics do abortions!!! Get educated on family planning

    Erick Reinstedt

I truly understand parents wanting to introduce subjects to their children on their time, and under their direction. It is a legitimate parental concern, and one of many reasons we homeschool. But the issue remains for those who believe that life begins at conception, and this is, “Then when is the right time?” We celebrate the Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July, and it has almost at its very beginning the statement that the Creator has given unalienable rights to all men, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. For those who believe that 3,000 or more people a day are having those rights taken from them with out being given a choice in the matter (meaning 3,000 plus babies whose “choice” is not considered in the “pro-choice” position) how could anyone stand by and not try and change that? Not putting the issue before people isn’t working, obviously. Our nation continues on its course. So what is the time and the place, then? At what point would people stand up and confront an issue if it was legal rape or a legal concentration camp or something like that in our midst? I’d hope that this nation of people who love freedom would rise up and do something, and not celebrate the freedom as if nothing is wrong. Again, I do understand the concern of parents, and I can think of many potential floats that could have gone by portraying things I would find offensive or not want my children exposed to. I really get that. But then I wonder. If not then, then when is the time? Again, being silent isn’t changing anything. And for people who believe those are defenseless babies that are being killed, it is morally wrong to just stand by and do nothing.

    Fabian Salas

    Shawn Kellim

    Shawn Kellim
Danny Ehinger you zealot! How dare you speak up for those without a voice on this day of Independence. You must be one of those Christian fanatics that actually lives out what the bible teaches. I suppose you would have jumped from your vehicle to rescue a toddler from being murdered or perhaps stopped a woman from being raped. Just think how that behavior would have inconvenienced those people only seeking to have a good time or those following you trying to participate. Why don't you attach one of those signs that display the truth to a pole and head down to the town square where your message is always well received. The people in this town obviously don't want to hear your message of the value of humanity because of our creation in the image of a Holy God. Or that by turning to our own lusts and desires of the flesh we have offended and sinned against this Creator God. But He is good and full of Grace and truth; desiring to restore the relationship we broke. He in all His love sent His son to redeem us, to pay our penalty and establish justice for us. As prophecy was fullfilled, He died on the cross and rose again on the 3rd day forever defeating death. He now waits in His heavenly Kingdom for just the right time to come back and judge the earth, for whosoever believes in Him shall be saved and restored. How dare you bring a message of hope to this town in the midst of the abomination of child sacrifice while townsfolk celebrate the freedom of life. You should friend me Danny so we can discuss friendship evangelism.

    Rick Thomas

Some day we will each stand before God and answer for what we do here. Depraved minds are self-seeking and come to the conclusion that if it is perceived to better my life, then it's okay to rip up and murder a baby.

    Danny Ehinger

    Exactly how dare we!

    John Pritchard

I guess it is freedom of speech, but I don't think that this is a good strategy for these folks. I bet most of the people at the parade were turned off and will think less of fundamentalists and their crusade.
