Paso Robles Fire Department highlights lithium-ion battery safety

– Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services is partnering with the National Fire Protection Association to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Charge into Fire Safety,” focused on the safe use of lithium-ion batteries. The campaign runs from Oct. 5–11.
Lithium-ion batteries are found in devices such as phones, laptops, tools, e-cigarettes, and toys. Officials warn that the batteries can overheat, catch fire, or explode if damaged or misused.
This year’s safety message urges residents to buy, charge, and recycle safely. The department recommends purchasing products with certified safety labels and avoiding unverified online items. Residents are advised to use original or approved chargers, charge on hard surfaces instead of beds or couches, and unplug devices once fully charged.
Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services also reminds the public not to throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or curbside recycling bins. For local disposal information, residents can contact the San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority at (805) 782-8530 or visit www.iwma.com.
“Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere, and while convenient, they must be handled appropriately,” said Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services Battalion Chief and Fire Marshal Paul Patti. “This campaign helps keep our community informed and safe.”
