Tryouts scheduled July 28 at War Memorial Field
– Paso Robles High School has announced the launch of its inaugural girls flag football program, which will begin this fall. Ken Hammond, a longtime member of the Paso Robles Joint Unified School District, has been named head coach.
Girls flag football is a non-contact version of American football where players wear flags that are pulled by the opposing team to signal a tackle. The sport has grown in popularity nationwide, with about 500,000 girls between the ages of 6 and 17 participating in 2023. Flag football is scheduled to be included as an Olympic sport for men and women at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
Hammond has worked in the district since 2016, serving as campus safety at Lewis Flamson Junior High School. He has coached soccer and previously served as head coach for the beach volleyball team at Paso Robles High School.
“I am incredibly excited to lead the inaugural girls’ flag football team at Paso Robles High School,” Hammond said. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our female athletes to showcase their talents, build camaraderie, and be part of a rapidly growing sport with a bright future. I’m eager to build a strong foundation for this program and create a positive and empowering experience for all our players.”
An informational meeting for interested athletes and their families will be held on Monday, July 14 at 10 a.m. in Bearcat Hall in the Williams’ Wing at Paso Robles High School, 801 Niblick Road, Paso Robles.
Tryouts for the fall season will begin Monday, July 28 at War Memorial Field, located at Lewis Flamson Junior High School, 2405 Spring Street, Paso Robles.
