Officials issue Memorial Day weekend safety reminders
Fire and emergency services share travel, water, and barbecue tips
– Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services is reminding the public to take precautions during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend as temperatures rise and larger crowds are expected.
Officials advise residents and visitors to stay cool, drink water regularly, and use sunscreen. They also emphasized the importance of situational awareness during outdoor and recreational activities.
Travel safety
Drivers are advised to buckle up, slow down, and avoid impaired driving. Officials recommend being well-rested and alert behind the wheel, staying off mobile phones, and informing someone of travel plans, including destination, route, and estimated arrival time. Drivers are encouraged to remain patient and courteous on the road.
Water safety
For those participating in water sports such as paddle boarding, boating, or surfing, officials urge everyone to wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. They recommend ensuring all participants know how to swim, avoiding swimming alone, and not leaving children unattended near water. People should also inform someone of their plans, including departure and return times.
Barbecue safety
Officials warn that careless cooking practices can lead to injuries and home fires. Grills should never be used indoors or left unattended, and should be placed outside, away from houses, decks, sunshades, tree branches, or anything that can catch fire. Hot grease or ashes may spill and pose a fire risk, especially on wooden decks or in dry vegetation.
Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services encourages the community to follow these guidelines to help ensure a safe holiday weekend.
