Spring is here and summer is on its way. With the onset of the warmer weather now is the perfect time to check plumbing systems for maintenance and repairs. As water usage increases over the warmer months it is important to check for drips and leaks, a single dripping faucet can waste hundreds of gallons of water in a year. Here are Paso Robles 4 G’s Plumbing’s top tips for plumbing maintenance.

Conserve water in the kitchen and bathroom

Check faucets for drips and leaks and make repairs to save water, check toilets for hidden leaks and inspect the tank for cracks. Add drops of food coloring to the toilet tank if colored water appears in the toilet bowl there may be a leak. Inspect for slow leaks in the home by taking a reading on the water meter before bedtime. The next morning, without using any water overnight, take another reading. If the reading has changed there may a leak that should be repaired.

Check the water heater

Check the temperature setting on the water heater and make sure it is set no higher than 120°F to prevent scalding and reduce energy use. Carefully drain several gallons from the water heater tank to flush out corrosion causing sediment, which reduces heating efficiency and shortens the life of the heater. Check the water heater manufacturer ‘s website for specific instructions concerning the specific make and model. Consider replacing a water heater more than 15 years old. (The first four numbers of the serial number represent the month and year it was made.) Newer water heaters are more energy efficient.

Clean your drains

Check that all drains have strainers to prevent debris clogging the drain lines. Pour a gallon of water into infrequently used drains (including floor drains) to fill the trap and prevent odors from entering the house. Check exposed pipes under sinks and in the basement for signs of leaks.
