Paso Robles police to hold DUI checkpoint Sept. 27

    Checkpoint scheduled from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.

    – The Paso Robles Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location.

Checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The department stated the primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Deputy Chief Davis said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

Police reminded the public that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

Funding for the checkpoint program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Office of Traffic Safety also funded a new DUI trailer wrap for the Paso Robles Police Department. The design includes updated branding elements, visuals and key messaging in line with the department’s partnership with the Office of Traffic Safety. Officials said the effort is part of a broader strategy to increase visibility, awareness and prevention of impaired driving.
