Paso Robles restaurant Roots on Railroad feeding community and families in need

Katie Castillo and Chris Beckett- Roots on Railroad paso robles

Roots on Railroad owners, Katie Castillo and Chris Beckett.

Roots on Railroad, a new and unique eatery in Paso Robles is providing free meals to families in need during this unprecedented time.

Located in the new Backyard on Thirteenth, Roots on Railroad offers gourmet street food from the regular menu, and special weekly gourmet prepared meals that can be ordered ahead of time and either picked up or delivered for a small delivery fee. A family meal is also delivered, free, to a family in need, every day.

Opening shortly after the State of California issued foodservice limitations, owners Chris Beckett and Katie Castillo had to rethink their business model, but not by much. The original purpose was to serve fresh and unique food from a walk-up counter, and provide catering. Catering is on hold until the coronavirus pandemic is over and social distancing and other health protections are relaxed. But, in the meantime, fresh food is ready and waiting.

They started with selling meat boxes, produce boxes, and some pantry items. The intent was to save people trips to the grocery store and avoid the lines and the contact in close proximity. The meat boxes are still available depending on availability from the suppliers. Good food is always available

The regular menu includes tasty dishes like the popular Lobster Roll, a Maine lobster claw poached in butter with lemon, celery, and in-house pepper aioli.

The food prep menu for pickup or delivery varies from week to week and is available on the Roots Derailed page on the website. Place orders by email and make pickup or delivery arrangements at that time.

The Roots on Railroad team relies on the public and a variety of other community resources for help identifying families in need. Email recommendations to hello@rootsonrailroad.com. The meals and delivery are free to the family. Castillo said their goal is to deliver one meal to a family every day.

“Our community has been so amazing. We’ve received so many donations via family meal orders and meal prep orders. People just want to help and we’re so grateful to help facilitate that during this uncertain and often scary time,” said Castillo.

Roots on Railroad is located at 1304 Railroad Street, Paso Robles, CA 93446. The phone number is (805) 296-3040. Hours are 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Thurs – Sat and 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sun-Wed.
