Paso Robles youth soccer team wins State Cup championship

    – The Central Coast Surf Soccer Club Girls 2013 team from Paso Robles won the Cal South State Cup championship last weekend in San Bernardino, defeating teams from across Southern California.

The team defeated Titan FC of the Inland Empire 5-0, defeated Fullerton City FC of Fullerton 3-0, tied 1570 FC of the Inland Empire 1-1, defeated Las Futboleras of San Bernardino 3-0 in the semifinals, and defeated 805 Union FC of Santa Maria 2-1 in the championship match.

Head Coach Tomas Arreola said the team formed about a year ago with a small roster.

“I would say this is a Cinderella Story,” Arreola said. “About a year ago, we formed this team with about 5 players. Normal soccer teams carry 16-18 players.”

Arreola said the roster grew to 13 players by the summer of 2025, and the team began competing in tournaments, including one in the Bay Area, where the team placed second.

“By the fall, our team entered Coastal Soccer League,” Arreola said. “We ended in second place and missing the title by 1 point.”

The team later qualified for the Cal South State Cup tournament.

“Our girls were ready for this challenge,” Arreola said. “They played a very offensive game, scoring 13 goals, and played a strong defense. Only allowing 2 goals all tournament.”

In the championship match, the Paso Robles team took an early two-goal lead before the opposing team scored late in the first half to make the score 2-1.

“But our girls left everything on the field,” Arreola said. “They fought for each other, they fought for our club, and they fought for the dream of becoming champions.”

Coach Joilene Hazard said the team brought together players from a variety of backgrounds.

“A group of local girls, all different backgrounds, different skill levels, different cultures, different resources, came together to win State Cup,” Hazard said.

Hazard said the team also worked with a performance coach, Dr. Rachel Hoeft, to address performance anxiety and negative self-talk among players.

“They chose each other. They worked. They never took their foot off the gas,” Hazard said. “And together, they won it all.”

    Tournament results are available here.
